bronx ny jewelersMany people come in in to Studio Jewelers (Bay Plaza) to buy that special piece of Jewelry for that special someone, from their favorite jewelry shop. Surprisingly, most are ready to buy some glittering gold, but do not understand what the differences in gold purities are, and can be confused by the different prices on similar looking pieces. As your most trusted Bronx NY Jewelers, we want to make sure that you understand what you’re buying, and why it costs what it does. The three post popular gold purities are 10 karat (10 parts out of 24, or 41.67% pure gold), 14 karat (14 parts out of 24, or 58.33% pure gold), and 18 karat (18 parts out of 24, or 75.00% pure gold). The higher the gold content, the higher the cost to the jewelers, and thus the higher the final price of the product. If you look at a jewelry gallery, jewelers displays, or even jewelry shows’ products, you will be able to notice the difference between the three. 10 karat (10k, for short) gold is usually a deeper bronze color, and is very strong. Of the three main types of gold, 10k is the best able to resist breaking under tension, and is the hardest and least stretchy of the bunch. It is the second most common type of gold jewelry, and the lowest priced. 14k gold is the most commonly found type of gold, is a rich yellow color (unless tinted rose, or plated with rhodium to make it white), and is of average strength and stretchiness. It is the most moderately priced of the three most commonly sold types of gold jewelry. 18k gold is the most expensive of the three, is much softer, and more likely to break under tension. The reason for this is that the gold content is much higher in the jewelry, and thus the characteristics of gold are more prominent. The color of 18k gold is also the most lustrous of the three, and has a bright yellow color to it (unless changed to rose, or plated white).
